Product Description

You no longer need a traditional employer plan to get good, affordable health insurance. The New Health Insurance Solution can help you cut your health insurance costs in half if:
  • You're self-employed, an independent contractor, or your employer doesn't provide health insurance (you can probably get coverage on your own for about $94/month—a fraction of what an employer would have to pay for the same coverage)
  • You are employed and pay extra to cover your spouse or children under your employer-sponsored plan—you may save 50% by taking them off your employer plan
  • You own a small business and are getting killed by double-digit premium increases—you can now give employees tax-free money to buy their own plans and get your company out of the health insurance business

The book also explains in detail the best solutions for you if:

  • You can't find affordable health insurance because you or a child have an expensive preexisting medical problem (your state has a program to provide you with guaranteed coverage )
  • You're currently putting money into an IRA or a 401(k)—because you don't realize that an HSA is always a better option
  • You're unsure how you or your parents will be able to afford health insurance during retirement, or how to maximize benefits from Medicare—including the new Part D prescription drug plan

The New Health Insurance Solution is the definitive guide to the new ways every American can now get affordable health care—without an employer.

Barbara Saunders Said: Nice Spin, but not accurate ( May. 14th 2009 )

As the director of a large group of self-employed professionals in the Pacific NW, I was extremely disappointed with this. Let's stop trying to paint a rosy picture on a very BAD situation. Fact is, health insurance is very inaccessible to individuals. Each state is different, so there is no blanket answer. There are some lower premium plans for males in their 20s, but that's only if they do not actually try to use the coverage. If they need to see a doctor, the premiums go up - so the plan is just for carrying the card. As for the rest of us, there is not a reasonable answer yet. HSAs are not what they promise to be. For one, they are not portable. That means that once you DO find a plan (usually fairly high premium and very high deductible) you are locked into the HSA. Then the plan can raise premiums whenever they want and you cannot go elsewhere. Again, the 'plan' does not actually cover any health care. You pay for everything out of your pocket. Your premiums only cover the card you carry. This is not a bargain.

This is not a book of solutions. The number of self-employed professionals is more than one third of all the work force of the US. We need to DEMAND better than this or we will stop paying double taxes.

Mr. Philzer, please use your skills to deal with the real issue, not candy coating it just to make yourself a few bucks.

Very disappointed.

First I'm FOR universal health care. Those who gave the book low ratings because of our messed up system and blaming the author are barking up the wrong tree. There are political stances in the book but not too much. The greed behind health care sucks but it's not his fault.

Of the three books I've read so far this was the most informative. It did make me smarter about how to look for affordable insurance. I now know the difference between the three major commercial types, HMOs, PPOs, and High Deductables. I'm smarter about drugs.

Whether it will help me find affordable insurance is another thing. I'm in a good, but expensive HMO currently, with premiums that are going to rise with my age out of my financial grasp if I don't find something more affordable.

ONE star deducted for not telling us HOW to choose a Doctor, or group or find a decent broker. That's essential info we need that is dang hard to find. Better web URLs might help.

ONE star deducted because he does not make it clear enough he's a principle in ehealthinsurance.com. Morally this could have been 2 stars.

Stephanie Said: Please! Read this book BEFORE medical testing/dianoses and if self-employed!!!! ( Jan. 10th 2009 )

You must read this book - there are so many fantastic tips for attaining your own health insurance. Do NOT willy-nilly just apply for a policy WITHOUT first reading this book!!!! If you are denied, ridered or pro-rated - you will pay DEARLY for the rest of your life. It sucks, but it's true. One incredible tip of the book is to apply to MORE than one company/policy at the same time and watch/wait like a hawk.... We just did. My husband was denied coverage to one company, but the other accepted us. No need to say we'd been denied coverage - a huge flag for further denials and prorating. Of course, we'll now need to hold the coverage forever. But it's reasonable, high deductible plan that is all we need anyway - unless a huge emergency or illness hits... then we have a 5 million outofpocket max. I NEVER would have thought to do this or many of the other things in this book without reading it first. Anyway - please read this NOW - and get your health insurance figured out for the long-term BEFORE getting a "bad" diagnosis, treatment or heck - even a dump prescription med - that will ruin your insurance possibilities forever!!!

PS - just having a high deductible plan of any kind usually lowers your actual charges from a hospital or office by 50% or more!!! (Disgusting if you ask me! - Charging the uninsured MORE than you'd accept from an insurance company! And they wonder why healthcare and insurance costs are so outta control...? Greed on both sides is gonna send us into pathetic govt run healthcare.) Hospitals and offices usually don't / can't charge interest and can get you on a payment plan after you negotiate them down even further.

Also - order prescription drugs from canada. Prescription coverage is usually soooo not worth the money - and will put you at risk for denial of a policy if it covers your drugs. They are the same drugs and again - less than 50% the price in the U.S.

Thank you for writing this book!!! PS - unless you have an uninsurable condition or are/will become pregnant or anticipate a surgery, COBRA is a ripoff. Keep it only till you get your own policy.

Best book on Health insurance solutions I have ever read and I am an insurance agent who reads a lot. Mr Pilzer has his hands around the problem. If we would all move to his solution, we would dramatically reduce health care expenditures and provide employees with real insurance coverage that goes with them when they leave an employer.
